“What if…”

Acting Without a Why or Wherefore.

On the International Day of the Girl, The Paper Fig Foundation asked girls from the Kasese in southwest Uganda. ‘What makes you feel strong?’ Among the many heartfelt answers, I was particularly taken with 12-year-old Tracy Masika who wrote. “Dancing with my friends makes me feel strong.”

Dancing is such an open and free-flowing expression of ‘what if…’ As in, what if I threw myself in the air and spun around?

I found Tracy’s ability to find strength in something as pure and unbridled as dancing to be so wise. It reminded me of the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart, who encouraged people to act without a why or wherefore.

When I look at nature, I see a whole lot of what if… I see it at the center of creation; in nature and art and wherever ideas burst forth, and it’s what I’ve tried to capture with this series.

Please help the The Paper Fig Foundation continue their work, providing the support and skills that help Tracy, and girls like her, become and stay strong.

It feels wrong to show this work in opulent apartments while raising money for communities who often live in simple brick and earth-build dwellings. But, since recognizing this disparity and working towards a more equitable world is the purpose of my work, I hope you’ll forgive the process.  David McIntyre
